Guitar Boss

Slow, simple guitar training — just for you.
2-week track
Start here
Step-by-step
We’ll go slow. One chord, one strum, one small win at a time.
Today’s tiny win
Goal: hold the guitar comfortably, make one chord, and strum it four times. That’s it. Anything more is a bonus.
2-week plan
Days 1–14
Tap any day to jump straight to that lesson.
Day 1 • First steps
Hold + Em + Strum
1. Sit comfortably
• Sit in a normal chair, not a deep couch.
• Keep both feet flat on the floor.
• Relax your shoulders — no stiffness needed.
2. Where the guitar sits
• Rest the body of the guitar on your right leg (if you’re right-handed).
• Tilt the guitar slightly back toward you so you can see the strings.
• The neck should point a little bit up, not straight flat.
3. Left hand shape
• Place your thumb behind the neck, not hooked over the top.
• Curve your fingers like you’re gently holding a small orange.
• Later, your fingertips will press the strings — not the flat pads.

4. First chord: E minor (Em)
Keep the guitar held like above. Now place:

Middle finger on the 2nd fret of the 5th string (A string).
Ring finger on the 2nd fret of the 4th string (D string).
• All other strings stay open.
E minor (Em) 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 2 2 0 0 0 0 = open string 2 = press at 2nd fret Fingers: - 2 (middle): string 5, fret 2 - 3 (ring): string 4, fret 2
5. First strum: Down ×4
• Rest your right forearm lightly on the guitar.
• Your hand should hover over the sound hole.
• For now, just use all downstrums.
Pattern: Down Down Down Down Count: 1 2 3 4
You’ll hear a low click on each downstrum. Try to match your hand to the beat.
Practice: make the E minor chord, strum Down–Down–Down–Down, then relax. Do this little cycle 3–5 times. That’s enough for Day 1.
Day 2 • Em ↔ G
Switching chords
1. Review E minor
Make your E minor chord from Day 1. Strum Down–Down–Down–Down a few times.
2. New chord: G major
G major (G) 6 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 0 0 0 3 Suggested fingers: - 2 (middle): string 5, fret 2 - 3 (ring): string 6, fret 3 - 4 (pinky): string 1, fret 3
Strum all six strings.
3. Slow switching drill
Em → G → Em → G Each: Down–Down–Down–Down
Take your time when moving between chords.
4. Hear the pattern again
Pattern: Down Down Down Down
Today is about starting the movement between two chords, not about speed.
Day 3 • New strum pattern
Down–Down–Up–Down
1. Pattern on Em
Pattern: Down Down Up Down Count: 1 2 & 3
2. Hear it
Low click = Down, high click = Up.
3. Add G when ready
Em: Down Down Up Down G: Down Down Up Down
Switch slowly.
Day 4 • A minor (Am)
New chord
1. A minor shape
A minor (Am) 5 4 3 2 1 0 2 2 1 0 Fingers: - 2 (middle): string 4, fret 2 - 3 (ring): string 3, fret 2 - 1 (index): string 2, fret 1
Strum from the 5th string down.
2. Em ↔ Am
Em → Am → Em → Am Each: Down–Down–Down–Down
This chord adds a lot of emotion. Today is about getting used to its shape and sound.
Day 5 • Christian rhythm
Down–Down–Up–Up–Down
1. Pattern on Em
Pattern: Down Down Up Up Down
2. Hear it
3. Add G
Em: Down Down Up Up Down G: Down Down Up Up Down
This pattern is used all over modern worship. Even if it feels strange now, it’s worth it.
Day 6 • Song 1
Em – G loop
1. Progression
| Em | G | Em | G |
2. Strum
Use the Christian rhythm:
Down Down Up Up Down
3. Worship idea
Gently loop this and hum or sing a simple phrase to God. Don’t worry about being fancy.
Day 7 • Review
Week 1 recap
No new info. Let your hands and brain catch up.
Review ideas
• E minor with Down ×4
• Em ↔ G switching
• Day 3 pattern (Down–Down–Up–Down)
• Christian rhythm from Day 5
• Em–G song from Day 6
Even a couple of relaxed minutes is a win. Stop before you get frustrated.
Day 8 • C major
New chord
1. C shape
C major (C) 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 0 1 0 Fingers: - 3 (ring): string 5, fret 3 - 2 (middle): string 4, fret 2 - 1 (index): string 2, fret 1
Strum from the 5th string down.
2. Am ↔ C
Am → C → Am → C Down–Down–Down–Down each
C is a bit of a stretch. Take breaks if your hand gets tired.
Day 9 • Strum comfort
Down–Up feel
1. Down–Up pattern
Pattern: Down Up Down Up Count: 1 & 2 &
2. Hear it
Keep your hand moving gently even if you miss strings.
3. Try on other chords
Once it feels okay on Em, try the same on Am and C.
Day 10 • Song 2
Em – C – G – C
1. Progression
| Em | C | G | C |
2. Choose a strum
Use either:
• Down–Down–Up–Down (Day 3), or • Christian rhythm (Day 5).
3. Gentle worship loop
Loop it slowly. Focus on smooth chord changes, not speed.
Day 11 • D major
New chord
1. D shape
D major (D) 4 3 2 1 0 2 3 2 Fingers: - 1 (index): string 3, fret 2 - 2 (middle): string 1, fret 2 - 3 (ring): string 2, fret 3
Strum from the 4th string down.
2. G ↔ D
G → D → G → D Down–Down–Down–Down each
G and D show up together a lot in worship songs.
Day 12 • 4-chord loop
G – D – Em – C
1. Famous progression
G D Em C | | | |
2. Strum
Use the worship pattern:
Down Down Up Up Down
3. Loop it
Just loop G–D–Em–C and let the sound sink in. This is the backbone of many songs.
Day 13 • Dynamics
Loud & soft
1. Soft vs strong
On G–D–Em–C:

• One round very soft.
• One round stronger.
• Then back to soft.
2. “Chick” mute
Lightly rest the side of your strumming hand on the strings to get a soft “chick” sound between chords. Just experiment.
Today is about feel, not perfection.
Day 14 • Celebration
You made it
Two weeks in. You’ve stuck with it. That matters.
What you know now
• Chords: Em, G, Am, C, D
• Patterns: Down ×4, Down–Down–Up–Down, Down–Down–Up–Up–Down, Down–Up repeats
• Progressions: Em–G, Em–C–G–C, G–D–Em–C

Tips & comfort zone
No pressure
1. Tiny steps count
A few minutes of calm practice is better than a long, frustrated session.
2. Buzzing is normal
Every beginner deals with buzzing strings. Your fingers will adjust.
3. Take breaks
If your hands or brain feel overloaded, stop. Come back later. That’s not failure — that’s smart.
